Unacceptable service from Parklane Clinic
To whom it may concern,
On Thursday the 9th of March 2006 at +- 8:00 am my daughter, Skyla Lee Komadinovic, was admitted to Parklane Clinic with gastro. She is 13 months old. Shortly after she was admitted ex-rays were done on her chest and it was said she had pneumonia. Bloods were taken, as well as stool samples to be cultured.
On Friday the 10th of March 2006 I visited Skyla during my lunch hour. I then returned again after work. When I arrived in the peads ward I could hear my daughter crying. She was in room 6c, isolation. When I went in she had her drip line wrapped around her foot, tummy and most importantly around her neck! I called to staff that were standing at the reception desk chatting to see the situation. I was ignored. A cleaning lady then signaled to one of the sisters at the reception desk that I was calling for any one of them to help me. One of the sisters came into the room and I showed her the line around my daughter’s neck. She had nothing to say. I voiced that this was completely unacceptable! Grace then came in and apologized and said they only left her for 5 minutes. My response is that in that situation, with her drip line around her neck, all it would take is 5 minutes for her to be in a situation where her airways could be cut off. What confused me is how they could not hear her screaming in her cot when I could hear her as I walked into the ward. I feel this is complete neglect or laziness on their part.
Once the above situation was over I asked if I could have a baby bath to bath my daughter as I could clearly see she had not been bathed as she was dirty and in the same cloths I left her in which were dirty as well. One of the sisters brought me a bath. I then asked a different sister to disconnect the drip for me so I could undress my daughter and bath her. She was reluctant to help. I asked again, she then proceeded to fiddle with the drip and was unsuccessful in disconnecting it. I then asked her to call another sister if she was unsure how to disconnect the drip. She ignored me. I asked again if we could disconnect it and she blatantly told me “No”. I then asked for a towel for my daughter. The sister said no, I must use one of her toweling nappies which is her comfort blanket. I asked again for a towel and got the same response. I then told the sister I was not going to use the toweling nappy as it is my daughters comfort blanket and I wanted a towel. She reluctantly brought me a towel. She left the room. I removed my daughter’s nappy only to find she had been left with a dirty nappy and now had a red bum! Grace came to inspect this and stated it was red. I bathed my daughter with the drip still connected but I could not dress her with it connected so I figured out how to disconnect it myself!
By this stage I was extremely frustrated so I left the ward to take a walk and find someone to voice my grievances to. I asked a lady named Joan sitting at admissions who I should talk to. She suggested Grace at the peads ward as she was the sister in charge. I went back to the ward and explained everything to Grace. Her response was “hhmm”. Obviously I was not satisfied with this response and was becoming more annoyed so I went back down to Joan and asked who I could speak to that was higher in rank than Grace as I was unsuccessful with her. She suggested I speak to Felicity. Joan called Felicity for me at the admissions desk and a few minutes later Felicity met me at the pre-admissions desk. I explained the situation to her. She was apologetic on behalf of Parklane and stated the pead staff’s behavior was inexcusable. She gave me her cell number and stated if I needed anything I should call her and she’ll come do it herself if need be.
I proceeded back to the peads ward feeling a little better after speaking to Felicity. I asked a sister at the reception if we could reconnect Skyla’s drip. After waiting a while the same sister who refused to disconnect the drip and get me a towel came in to reconnect the drip. She wanted to just connect it. Now I know from previous times Skyla was in hospital that it needs to be flushed with saline and cleaned with a sterilizing agent. When I suggested this to the sister she just looked at me and went on to proceed connecting the drip. I again asked her if she was sure it did not need to be cleaned and flushed, she replied she was sure. I then insisted it be flushed and cleaned as I know this is standard procedure and I was not going to let her proceed. She stormed out the room. A few minutes later Grace came in and flushed the drip line and cleaned the connection. She reconnected the drip. Skyla’s father, Sasha Komadinovic, then arrived as he would be staying with her for the night. I left to go home shortly after he arrived. I called Sasha on Saturday morning to see how Skyla was during the night. He stated he was up every hour with her crying and moaning. I arrived on Saturday morning to spend the day with Skyla. In her file showing hourly checks it stated that during the night “baby asleep”, “baby comfortable and asleep” and other such comments. At no time did it state she was awake, unsettled or crying!
I also checked her blood results and cultures in her file as none of the sisters every informed me of results, progress or what the pediatrician said. I saw she had rotary virus according to the results. After looking through the file I went into Skyla’s room to play with her. She was taken off the drip as request by her pediatrician. I let her run around the room a little as she had been confined to her cot. She then threw up all over the floor. I cleaned it up. I informed one of the sisters that she had thrown up and asked if the cleaning lady could just mop the floor. For lunch she had 1 piece of spaghetti and a tea spoon of jelly, she ate the same amount for dinner and refused to drink any fluids. I informed one of the sisters of this various times through out the day. My pediatrician said she may be discharged on condition that she was not vomiting, did not have a runny tummy and was eating and drinking nicely. What must be realized is that she basically hadn’t eaten since Wednesday morning, the 8th of March 2006. She had nothing left in her tummy to throw up or poo out! Besides which she had thrown up in the morning after some of a milk bottle. The sister then told my pediatrician Skyla had not thrown up or had a runny tummy (she made no poo’s on Saturday) and was eating and drinking well! She was thus discharged at +- 18:00pm on Saturday!
When I got home she threw up, she threw up during the night. She would not eat or drink and threw up in the morning again! I phoned my pediatrician and she said I should readmit her to Parklane as she would need to go back on the drip and obviously was not better! I refused to take her back to Parklane. She is currently in Olivedale Clinic where I am much happier with the service we are receiving as my daughter is well look after and we as the parents are well informed of her progress, what medication she’s on, what the pead said and other such relevant information.
I feel the way my daughter was treated at Parklane is beyond unacceptable. I feel her life was put at risk! Staff lied twice that I can prove, I’m unsure what other lies may have been told. My daughter is 13 months old and can not communicate if she is being mistreated or in distress, thus I am being her voice. She should never have been discharged in the condition she was. Staff informed my pediatrician she was doing much better when in actual fact she was not! This matter needs to be look into very seriously and dealt with accordingly.
I expect to hear from all relevant committees/persons A.S.A.P.
Regards,
Candice Brophy
