| Complaint | I regularly take my little 3 year old boy to see a movie at the Ster Kinekor, Somerset Mall. At R14.00 at ticket, it was affordable entertainment. I was horrified; on a Sunday evening last year, to find out that the ticket price had increased to R38.00. Which comes to a cool R76 just for my child and I to watch a movie. Am I the only one who can't afford to even go to a movie anymore? Surely we have the right to watch movies at the cinema closest to us.
Surely we have the right to affordable, good quality entertainment, especially for children??
Is anyone else prepared to sign a petition against these exorbitant prices; to send to Ster Kinekor? It is bad enough you get totally ripped off with the prices of anything you buy to eat during the movies.
Below is a copy of the letter I e-mailed to the CEO of Ster-Kinekor. I have, to date, received no reply from him.
Dear Fiaz,
With reference to your rather poor response to Yano Fanoudis (District Mail, 25 November 2005).
I very much doubt that Ster Kinekor are genuinely concerned about the so-called “unhappiness” of their customers. If anyone would want to view a specific movie that is not showing at the Mall; I’m sure they don’t have a problem with seeing that one movie at another venue. It is rather pathetic to use that excuse as a basis to increase the movie prices at the Mall by 171%!! AND WITHOUT EVEN INFORMING THE PUBLIC BEFOREHAND. No notice at the cinema or anything to that effect. To me, and I’m sure thousands others, that is unethical business practice and totally profit-focussed.
What is of interest to me also is whether or not the staff working at the cinema had their salaries increased by 171% in line with increased ticket prices?
Ster Kinekor may make a killing over the holiday period with their exorbitant prices; but I am of the opinion, in the long run, that the previously loyal patrons will take their patronage elsewhere; with a future drastic loss in profits made from the Somerset Mall Ster-Kinekor.
Good luck to you and your company’s undemocratic philosophy. May you succeed with your mission of establishing a monopoly within the cinema industry in our democratic country.
