| Complaint | The last few times I have gone to the movies, I have noticed a major degradation of the sound and video.
It started with Shrek 2 which I had the misfortune of watching at Eikestad mall, Stellenbosch. There was a section of the screen at the top where the picture was scrambled. This is very distracting, to say the least, so we complained. Complaining got us a refund on our tickets, but then was asked to leave the cinema which we naturally refused. We wanted to watch the movie; we only complained about the bad quality picture; fixing it would've been acceptable.
Since then, I have noticed that not only this movie was bad, but so were those at Tyger valley and Somerset West. Each and every ster kinekor cinema I have been to has speakers all around the room, but lately, they don't bother using them. When Dolby digital surround sound was the latest craze, those speakers were used in every movie and they were the talk of every "movie goer". Have they all broken from wear and tear?
I recently went to see "Narnia - The lion, the witch and the wardrobe" in Clear Water Mall in Roodepoort. This movie was bearable, but there were still noticeable problems with the movie. Firstly, the sound was soft. Secondly, there was no Dolby digital surround sound. Thirdly, the movie looked like it was slightly blurred on the one side, and lastly, there was occasional distortion on the left side. I did not complain as I was still able to concentrate on the movie; thus clear proof that I don't just complain about anything and everything.
The next movie, I went to see was "The family stone" at Eikestad mall in Stellenbosch. This time, the volume was incredibly low; so low in fact, that I could hear the people in the front row chewing popcorn. I naturally went to complain, and the volume was increased to a more acceptable volume. Another problem was that the screen had a huge tear at the bottom which was very noticeable and quite disappointing to say the least.
Last night, I went to watch "Fun with dick and Jane". The sound was only coming from one speaker in the front of the cinema; I couldn't even hear if it was stereo or not. The sound was once again soft enough to hear the unpleasant sound of people chewing popcorn all around you. I complained once again, and the volume was increased to a more acceptable volume. Somerset west ster kinekor has recently been re-built I would've expect more from a new cinema.
What exactly is going on? I remember days when the sound was almost too loud; the seats used to vibrate when an actor did so much as burp; thus, sending the experience directly into your body. I also remember days when going to the cinema was "always better on the big screen"? - Now, it's the big, tattered, torn screen.
Why should I have to complain before the movie is at an acceptable viewing experience? In the distant past, the only distractions in the movie were the occasional person next to you suckling and soothing her crying baby (Damn!).
